The Chamberlin Family Foundation is proud to join the UC Regents, Senator Kamala Harris, Representative Barbara Lee, State Superintendent of Education Tony Thurmond, and hundreds of other elected officials, local leaders, activists and organizations in support of California Proposition 16.
Our foundation works in West Contra Costa County to support equity in public education. We believe that a just and healthy public school ecosystem must work to identify and dismantle historical, systemic inequities in order to fulfill its obligation to students and communities.
Proposition 16 will restore the option for our public institutions to factor race, ethnicity, and gender into the design of school systems that drive equity. As long as the legacy effects of racial and gender bias persist, our K-12 public schools, community colleges, and public universities need the freedom to consider these factors in critical decisions they face. When allocating funds, apportioning resources, building teaching teams that reflect student populations, and diversifying faculty and staff, Proposition 16 will once again allow our public institutions to advance equity throughout our K-12 campuses, colleges, and communities.
